border crossing.

January 9, 2010

yesterday we spent a few frigid hours in san antonio.
we saw the alamo, but the city was not as i remembered it from childhood.
possibly because the windchill was well below freezing,
and neither of us brought any true winter attire south.

that left us running down the riverwalk with teeth chattering.
the river had been drained (presumably for maintainance)
so it was better named “the sidewalk next to the sludge pit.”
still hopeful hosts hawked their menus outside restaurants,
one which had draped mexican blankets over
ever outdoor chair
demonstrating their adaptability in care.

charming as it was,
directly after encountering the frozen dead pigeon,
we decided to drive on to laredo.

we spent last night in this border town,
it basically looks and feels like american stores in mexico.

now it’s the wee hours and we are up
and ready to cross, praying we don’t encounter any problems.
pray with us for that.
the border is 7.5 miles away, 4 as the crow flies but that would be
illegal immigration.
from there it’s roughly 700 miles through mexico to home.
